Life-Work Balance …an urban myth?
The answer is “it depends on what you believe”! – And you might say, “but why would I believe that I want to live a life where so many things are out of Balance?!”
And you are right! Consciously, you do not wish that to be true. However, we have been programmed and conditioned to believe that “living an unbalanced life is normal”, since that is all we saw, heard and felt growing up, and it is the ongoing message we continue to receive every day, as we go on with life. As a culture, we have “normalized” that in order to have a successful life, we must sacrifice the balance in other areas.
We have been led to believe that we cannot have our cake AND eat it too!
Why can´t we have a well, rounded Balanced life if we really want to?
During the first 7 years of our childhood, we receive countless messages from the environment, without any filter. Our parents, family, and society deliver these messages constantly, which become the foundation of our belief system. These programs or beliefs are stored in our subconscious mind and they run at least 95% of our daily activities, in a kind of auto-pilot.
According to Dr. Bruce Lipton – PhD in cellular biology and pioneer in the field of epigenetic — at least 70% of the subconscious programs are limiting and self-defeating in nature!
That number is as astounding as it is hopeful! It is astounding as it explains why our mind seems to have a mind of its own, and why it feels like we have a foot on the accelerator and on the brake at the same time. And it is hopeful, as we realize that we have the super-power to survive and adapt, despite the many limiting programs we have stored in our subconscious mind.
Yet, that takes a lot of energy to do, so today we want to share with you that we have a simple, practical and effective way to change the self-limiting beliefs. Keep reading!
It is important to clarify that not all subconscious programs are limiting in nature! We have many self-enhancing programs (adaptability, curiosity, resiliency, compassion), and many that are also essential for daily survival (walking, breathing, eating, driving the car, talking, etc.).
What areas of your life are lacking Balance ?
Let´s do a simple exercise – on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is there is no balance at all and 10 is you are experiencing total balance, self-assess how you perceive your life in these 11 areas:
1. Relationship with yourself – Self-Esteem.
2. Relationship with your emotions.
3. Relationship with your mind, thoughts, ideas and the development of an expansive vision of life.
4. Physical self-care (diet/exercise).
5. Relationship with time.
6. Making time for recreation/enjoyment/vacation
7. Development of healthy and harmonious relationships
8. Connection with your family (the real and human kind of connection – not virtual)
9. Connection with your friends (same as above – not the virtual, text message kind)
10. Exploration and development of new skills
11. Obtaining joy in your current occupation as a path for human growth
Add up your score and evaluate how you feel about the Balance of your life. Check which areas are going as you want them to, and where you see space for a more balanced experience.
